I finally got around to watching Across the Universe (a sleepover, bowling, and wicked good homemade quesadillas may have also been involved) and I adored it.
The movie was a series of portraits, full and vibrant and stunning portraits, of the music of the Beatles. In a nutshell.
Every single visual and character and plot was just a backdrop for their songs.
Which is especially fantastic, because music is generally the secondary character, the reaction to something else ... shadows of reality and emotion. But in this movie, everything is blossoming from a song, every scene is an evolution of the lyrics and melodies. And it's painfully beautiful.
It makes me want to immerse myself into The Beatles discography and never come up again.
Because music is about singing along, getting in on the joke.
Sanity for 2-3 minutes, at least.
